The Oktoberfest is a sixteen-day festival held each year in Munich, Bavaria, Germany during late September (and running to early October).
What began as a wedding commemoration for Prince Ludwig (the future King Ludwig I) and Princess Thereseof Saxe-Hildburghausen in 1810 has evolved into an annual debauched booze-fest replete with sausage, roast chicken, ox and, of course, beer by the ‘Big Six’ – Spaten, Löwenbräu, Augustiner, Hofbräu, Paulaner and Hacker-Pschorr breweries. How the Germans manage to squeeze all that in while wearing too-tight lederhosen (leather knickerbockers) and dirndl (traditional dress) remains a mystery.
